Malta becomes a member of the European
Union - 1st May 2004 |
At midnight Friday
Malta officially became a full member of the Europe Union alongside nine
other Easter European and Mediterranean countries. A spectacle of light and
fireworks welcomed the new chapter in Maltese history. Thousands of Maltese
flocked to the Grand Harbour to watch the live show, one of the biggest
crowds ever recorded in the area for a public event.
A few minutes before midnight Ross Ashton’s projections on Fort St Angelo
and then at midnight a light show by Gert Hof, accompanied by the music of
Roger Waters' new opera, were the climax of the celebrations that have been
going on in the country for several days.
Various personalities, including Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, delivered a
short message a few minutes before midnight.
Malta, together with the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia,
Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia will be officially welcomed by the
European Union in a ceremony, called "Day of Welcomes", in Ireland, which
currently holds the Presidency of the EU, ". Prime Minister Gonzi is
